Kaplan, Philip and Jack Currie 1998, HC, 224 pages, 232 photographs. 118 in colour. Biblog. Index.
The men of the American, British, and Canadian merchant marine are the forgotten heroes of the Battle of the Atlantic,
the longest and one of the most bitter and costly campaigns of WW2. From their first casuality in Sept. 1939 to the last
on VE Day in May 1945, nearly 50,000 men of the Allied merchant service lost their lives to Axis Torpedoes, bombs and
guns. This stunning portrait pays tribute to their all-important role. , This book is nostalgia at its finest. Price $36.95
OUT OF THE CHANNEL: The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Keeble, John 1991. HC. 290 pages. Index. Bibliography. ISBN 0-06-016334-8
The spill of oil was almost immediately followed by a no-less-transform-ing spill of Exxon's money and power. Over the
course of the next two years it was to spend over four billion dollars in its effort to contain and clean up both the oil and
the damage to its public image. Keeble walks the ghostly denatured beaches with marine biologists and cruises the
contaminated bays and inlets, making the reader a witness to the grim fiasco of Exxon's efforts, which may well have
done more lasting ecological damage than did the original offense. Price $22.95 + S/H

CONVOY: Drama in Artic Waters ISBN 1-86019-969-0 Kemp, Paul 1993. HC. 256 pages. 48 plates b/w photos. Appendix. Index of ships.
The convoys to N. Russia, the PQ/QP convoys, sailed in some of the most appaling conditions in the annals of naval
warfare-in the Artic Ocean. , The weather conditions made service on the routes a constant battle just to survive in the
bitter wind, hard packed ice and sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless the supplies kept going through. By the end of
the war close to 500,000,000 (pounds sterling) worth of vital weapons, transport and ammunition were delivered to an
ungrateful Soviet Union at the cost of 18 warships and 104 merchant vessels sunk. This history has made use of
original operation orders and reports and takes into account new Russian perspectives. There still remains today a
strong camaraderie among the survivors of those who sailed the North Russian convoys. Price $34.95

The 'Blue Riband', a mythical trophy for the fastest ship on the Atlantic, has fascinated the public for almost 200 years.

and in this new work he provides an exciting and accurate account of the search for speed across the Atlantic.
